The big example that pops into my head is the scandal at Abu Ghraib. We heard the excuse over and over, “I knew it was wrong, and I didn’t want to do it, but I was ordered to do it, so what could I do?” They brutalized people rather than face a reprimand, they remained silent rather than risk the disapproval of their friends.

I’m still amazed at what terrible things people will do to avoid very minor consequences.

Because the baddies are loud mouthed bullies? Because they’re in positions of authority & abuse their ‘power’? Because they are godless, & make & break rules as they see fit? Or worse – they are churchgoers, who publicly flaunt their disregard for the tenets of the Faith…

Tragic.
