There always seems to be a certain melancholy about Degas. It’s like looking at a bittersweet memory.
You sense that about Degas? I find it fascinating that he found ballerinas fascinating. The flowers from Jeffrey’s garden brought those ballerinas to mind.
Melancholy is how I perceive the work of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. And although dramatized, the movie of his life (Moulin Rouge, from 1952 starring Jose Ferrer) was superb.
Maybe it’s just the color pallette he uses, or maybe it’s just that I know how sad and lonely Degas’ life was.
My grandmother gave me a wonderful DVD for Christmas, a BBC production called (appropriately) The Impressionists. It’s all about the lives and interactions of those involved in the impressionist movement. I think you’d like it.
I’ll look for it…
Thanks for the recommendation, Thomas.
